Sungrow Secures 2.1 GW Contract to Deliver 1+X Modular Inverter Solutions to Saudi Arabia

Jun 21, 2023

Sungrow, a renowned supplier of inverter and energy storage system solutions, has entered into a contract with China Energy International Group Co., Ltd. to provide their innovative 1+X Modular Inverter solutions for the Al Shuaibah project in Saudi Arabia. This project, boasting a total AC capacity of 2.66 GW, is set to become the world’s largest photovoltaic (PV) project and play a significant role in the implementation of Saudi Vision 2030.

Al Shuaibah will be the sixth solar energy facility in Saudi Arabia developed by ACWA Power. Badeel and ACWA Power will jointly construct, own, and operate the Al Shuaibah facility, with the electricity generated being sold to the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). China Energy International Group is involved in the project as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company. The project is scheduled for completion in 2025 and will provide electricity to around 350,000 homes annually.

This endeavor marks an important milestone for the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), initiated by the Ministry of Education (MoE) with the goal of achieving 70% of the nation’s renewable energy through the Public Investment Fund (PIF) by 2030.

Sungrow will supply 240 units of its 1+X Modular Inverter solution along with 10,000 units of its combiner box for the Al Shuaibah project. The 1+X Modular Inverter is an innovative product that combines the advantages of central and string inverters. With its high IP65 protection capability, the solution is capable of withstanding harsh conditions such as sand, dryness, and strong winds. The inverter solution also utilizes smart forced air-cooling technology, enabling it to operate reliably in extremely high temperatures.

The 1+X Modular Inverter offers a flexible design, with a minimum capacity of 1.1 MW per unit, expandable up to 8.8 MW by combining eight units together. This flexibility allows customers to adapt the design to different block sizes and facilitates on-site operations and maintenance.

Each module of the 1+X Modular Inverter has equipped with an independent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technology, enhancing the power generation capacity of the overall system. Additionally, the inverter features intelligent string-level diagnosis to optimize power yield and real-time parallel arc detection to ensure system safety. These advantages contribute to reducing the overall operational expenditure (OPEX) of the project.

Xiong Gaoxia, the Al Shuaibah Project General Manager of China Energy International Group, expressed delight in partnering with Sungrow, emphasizing that the Al Shuaibah project is the largest in their portfolio and will contribute to the sustainable development of Saudi Arabia by supplying clean power to the grid. Xiong Gaoxia praised Sungrow for its industry-leading modular inverter solution, extensive experience, and dedicated local team, which are instrumental in delivering long-term benefits to all stakeholders.

James Wu, the Senior Vice President of Sungrow, expressed gratitude for the continued trust of China Energy International Group and affirmed Sungrow’s commitment to ensuring the smooth delivery of this remarkable project in Saudi Arabia. Wu stated that Sungrow will provide reliable solutions and dedicated local services, considering the Middle East and North African (MENA) region as one of the most dynamic markets for renewable energy. Sungrow aims to contribute to the local energy transition by offering competitive products and services.
